Dryer fires sound like something that happens to other people. They don't. According to the National Fire Protection Association, clothes dryers and washing machines together account for thousands of home structure fires every year — and the dryer is the cause in the overwhelming majority of them. In Edmonton, where exterior vent hoods freeze, ice up, and trap moisture for half the year, the problem hits harder than it does in milder climates.
The good news is dryers almost always warn you before they go. The signs are subtle, and most homeowners brush them off as "just the dryer getting old." They're not. They're the same six warnings techs see in the field, over and over, on calls that didn't turn into emergencies — and a few that did.
01 — Loads Take Longer Than They Used To
This is the single most reliable early warning, and the one almost everyone ignores. A healthy dryer dries a normal load in 40 to 50 minutes. If you're running two cycles to get jeans dry, or pulling out damp towels after a full hour, the dryer isn't getting weaker — it's suffocating.
What's happening: lint has built up somewhere in the airflow path — the lint trap housing, the back of the drum, the vent hose, or the exterior vent hood. The dryer can't exhaust the hot, wet air, so the clothes can't release moisture. Meanwhile, the heating element keeps cycling on, harder and longer, with nowhere for that heat to go.
Lint is roughly as flammable as newsprint. When trapped heat builds up against a lint-coated heating element or thermostat, all it takes is one over-temperature event for ignition. A slow-drying dryer is the single biggest red flag.
02 — The Dryer Is Hot to the Touch on the Outside
Put your hand on the side of the dryer mid-cycle. It should feel warm — not hot. If the cabinet, the door, or the top of the dryer is too hot to keep your hand on comfortably, the internal temperature has climbed well past where it's supposed to be.
Modern dryers have a high-limit thermostat that's supposed to shut the heating element off when internal temps get out of range. But these thermostats fail, and on older machines they're often the only thing between a normal cycle and a fire. If the cabinet is uncomfortably hot, the high-limit has either tripped repeatedly or is on its way out.
03 — A Burning Smell — Even a Faint One
Hot fabric has a smell. Burning lint has a different smell — closer to scorched dust or burnt paper. If you ever notice that smell when the dryer is running, stop the cycle, unplug it, and don't restart it until you've checked the vent and the lint path. This is not a sign to ignore for a few more loads to see if it gets worse.
Pull the dryer out from the wall. Disconnect the vent hose. Check inside the hose and inside the back of the dryer for clumps of lint. If you find anything that looks like a packed-down felt mat, you found the problem — and you got to it in time.
04 — The Exterior Vent Hood Isn't Pushing Air
Go outside while the dryer is running. Find the vent hood — it's usually on the side of the house, sometimes on the roof. You should feel strong, warm airflow coming out, and the flap should be open. Hold a piece of tissue near it: it should flutter visibly.
If there's weak airflow, no airflow, or the flap doesn't open at all, the vent line is blocked. In Edmonton, this often isn't just lint — it's ice. Warm, moist air hits the cold exterior cap in winter, condenses, freezes overnight, and partially blocks the opening. The next load adds more moisture, which freezes on top of the first layer. By February, plenty of Edmonton homes have a vent that's half-iced shut. The dryer doesn't know — it just keeps trying to push hot air past a block.
If you live in a house where the dryer vents straight up through the roof — common in some Sherwood Park and St. Albert builds from the '90s and 2000s — the lint problem is worse. Vertical runs collect lint at every elbow and need professional cleaning more often than a side-wall vent.
05 — Visible Lint Around the Door or on Clothes
A small amount of lint on the seal is normal. A lot — fine threads building up on the door gasket, lint visibly puffing out around the door during a cycle, or clothes coming out covered in lint they didn't go in with — means the airflow is backed up so badly that lint is escaping the catch points and being redistributed.
By the time lint is escaping into the laundry room, you've almost certainly got a lot more of it inside the machine and inside the vent line than you can see from the outside.
06 — The Dryer Stops Mid-Cycle and Restarts on Its Own
If your dryer keeps shutting itself off and then starting again — or you find it cool and stopped mid-cycle when you expected it to be done — the high-limit thermostat is tripping. That's its job: when the internal temperature goes too high, it cuts power to the heating element to prevent a fire.
This means the safety is working — but only just. A thermostat that's tripping regularly is being asked to do something it was designed to do once or twice in a lifetime. They wear out. When this safety eventually fails closed (the failure mode that's most dangerous), the heat keeps going with no shutoff.
If the dryer is shutting itself off mid-cycle, do not keep restarting it to finish the load. That's exactly the cycle that leads to a fire. Stop using the dryer until a tech has checked the vent, the high-limit thermostat, and the heating element.
What You Can Safely Do Yourself
Some of this you can handle without calling anyone. A weekly checklist:
- Clean the lint trap every single load. Not every other load. Every one. And once a month, pull the screen out and wash it with warm water and dish soap to dissolve the dryer-sheet film that clogs the mesh even when it looks clean.
- Pull the dryer out and vacuum behind it twice a year. Lint settles under and behind the machine, near the motor and the heating element.
- Check the outside vent hood every couple of months in winter. Knock ice off the flap if it's frozen open or shut. Make sure birds, mice, or insulation haven't blocked it.
When To Call a Pro
The DIY stuff handles maintenance. It doesn't handle deep vent runs — especially long ones, ones with multiple elbows, or ones routed through an attic or roof. Those need to be cleaned end-to-end with a rotary brush every 1–2 years. Call sooner rather than later if any of these are true:
- You've never had the full vent run professionally cleaned
- The dryer is older than 10 years and has never had a service
- You've had any two of the warning signs above at once
- The dryer is in a tight closet or alcove with limited airflow around it
- You can hear the dryer working harder than it used to — louder motor, more vibration

Dryers don't catch fire because they're old. They catch fire because lint built up where nobody was looking — and the warning signs were there for months. None of the six signs above mean a fire is inevitable. They mean the dryer is asking for help.
