Ice Maker Not Working?

The fridge is cold, the freezer is frozen, and the ice bin is empty. Ice makers fail in a handful of predictable ways, and two of the most common cost nothing to fix. Here’s how to tell which one you’ve got before you pay anyone.

What’s Probably Wrong

An ice maker is a small machine bolted inside a bigger one, and it depends on three things arriving correctly: water, cold, and a working signal to cycle. Almost every failure traces back to one of those three, which is why the fix is often cheaper than people expect.

The single most common cause we expect to see isn’t a broken part at all — it’s a frozen fill tube, where the little water line feeding the mould has iced shut. The second most common is a freezer that has drifted a few degrees too warm to trigger the harvest cycle. Both are worth ruling out before anyone opens a wallet.

Ranked by how often this kind of fault turns out to be each one. A list isn’t a diagnosis — that takes someone looking at your specific machine — but it’s worth knowing what’s on the menu before anyone quotes you.

Frozen Fill Tube

The thin tube feeding water into the ice mould ices over, usually after a slow drip from a worn inlet valve or a door left ajar. Water can’t reach the mould, so the maker cycles on an empty tray forever. Thawing it clears the symptom — but if the valve is what caused the drip, it comes right back, so the tube is a clue rather than the whole answer.

Failed Water Inlet Valve

An electrically operated valve at the back of the fridge that opens to let water in. They fail two ways: stuck shut (no ice at all) or weeping (small hollow cubes, plus the frozen fill tube above). A valve needs adequate household water pressure to open properly, so a half-closed shutoff behind the fridge produces identical symptoms.

Clogged Water Filter

A filter well past its service life restricts flow enough that the mould never fills properly. You get small, hollow or crescent-shaped cubes before you get none. Worth checking early because it’s the cheapest thing on the list and requires no tools.

Freezer Running Too Warm

Ice makers need the freezer genuinely cold — around −18°C — before the mould thermostat will trigger a harvest. A freezer sitting at −12°C keeps food frozen and feels fine to the hand, but the ice maker simply never cycles. This one gets misdiagnosed constantly, because nothing looks broken.

Ice Maker Module or Thermostat

The motorised head that sweeps cubes out and signals for a refill. When the module or its internal thermostat fails, everything else in the chain works and nothing happens. Usually replaced as an assembly rather than repaired piece by piece.

Shutoff Arm or Optical Sensor

Every ice maker has a way to stop when the bin is full — a wire arm on older units, an infrared beam on newer ones. A nudged arm or a beam blocked by a stray bag reads as “bin full” permanently. Free to fix, and more common than you’d think.

Calgary’s water comes from the Bow and Elbow rivers, and hardness varies by quadrant and season — roughly 125–260 mg/L, with the Elbow-fed south generally harder and winter running harder than spring melt. Scale builds inside inlet valves and fill tubes, which shortens their life — so hard-water cities see more weeping valves than soft-water ones. And in older Bowness, Bridgeland, Inglewood and Killarney homes, fridge water lines were often added long after the house was built, sometimes with a saddle valve that was never great to begin with and is now a decade past its best.

Why a Real Diagnosis Matters

Several causes on the list above produce an identical symptom, and they sit at very different price points. That’s the whole argument for testing rather than guessing — a wrong part fitted confidently still leaves you with a broken appliance and a smaller bank balance.
