Ranked by how often this kind of fault turns out to be each one. A list isn’t a diagnosis — that takes someone looking at your specific machine — but it’s worth knowing what’s on the menu before anyone quotes you.
Worn Idler Pulley or Drive Belt
The idler pulley keeps tension on the belt, and its bearing is the single most common source of dryer squeal. Typically worse at the start of a cycle, sometimes fading as things warm up. The belt itself can also squeal as it glazes and hardens with age. Left long enough the belt eventually snaps — at which point the motor runs but the drum sits still.
Flat-Spotted or Worn Drum Rollers
The drum rides on support rollers. As they wear, or develop flat spots from sitting in one position, you get a rhythmic thump timed to drum rotation. It gets louder over months. Rollers are usually replaced as a set, because when one has worn the others are the same age.
Worn Drum Glides or Rear Bearing
The drum’s front edge rides on plastic glides and the back is supported by a bearing. When either wears through, metal contacts metal. This is the noise to take seriously — it abrades components quickly, and running it out can turn a modest repair into a much larger one.
Something in the Blower Wheel
Coins, buttons, underwire and hairpins migrate past the lint trap and end up in the blower housing. The sound is irregular rather than rhythmic, and often changes when the load shifts. Frequently just an extraction job, though a chipped blower wheel needs replacing.
Failed Start Capacitor or Seized Motor
The motor hums but nothing moves. Sometimes a start capacitor, sometimes a seized bearing, sometimes a jammed blower stopping the shaft. Don’t keep pressing start — a motor straining against a jam is how a repairable problem becomes a replacement.
Levelling and Floor
Not a part failure. An unlevelled dryer on an uneven laundry-room floor will drum and walk, and the sound reflects up through joists. Free to check, and it rules out the cheapest explanation before anyone opens the cabinet.
Before You Call
Worth ruling out first. If one of these is the answer you’ve saved yourself a service call, and if none of them are, the diagnosis starts from a better place:
- Identify the noise pattern before you call. Rhythmic with drum rotation suggests rollers. Continuous squeal suggests the idler or belt. Irregular rattle suggests something loose in the blower. Naming it shortens the diagnosis.
- Empty the drum and run it briefly. If the noise persists on an empty drum, it’s mechanical. If it only happens with a load, it may be balance or something caught in the clothing.
- Check the dryer is level and stable. Rock it corner to corner. A dryer that shifts is a dryer that drums against the floor.
- Check the lint trap housing for anything loose. Shine a light down the slot. Small hard items sometimes sit visible before they reach the blower.
- Stop running it if the noise is grinding. Squealing can wait a little. Metal-on-metal grinding is actively causing damage each cycle, and the repair cost climbs with every load.

- Matches the sound to the part. Rollers, idler, belt, glides and blower each sound different to someone who has heard them all fail. That’s most of the diagnosis before anything is opened.
- Replaces wear parts as a set where it makes sense. Rollers wear together. Replacing one and leaving three of the same age is how a repeat call gets booked.
- Catches the dangerous overlap. A dryer that’s noisy and running hot may have a lint-packed cabinet as well as worn parts. That’s a fire-risk conversation, not just a noise one.
- Tells you when the noise is free to fix. Levelling and coins in the blower housing are not repairs. You should hear that plainly.
