Ranked by how often this kind of fault turns out to be each one. A list isn’t a diagnosis — that takes someone looking at your specific machine — but it’s worth knowing what’s on the menu before anyone quotes you.
Door Lock or Lid Switch Failure
Front loaders use a door lock assembly that must engage and report back before the cycle begins; top loaders use a lid switch that does the same job. Both are mechanical parts that cycle thousands of times, and both are consumables in practice. Symptom: the machine powers up normally and then simply won’t proceed.
Power Supply, Outlet or Breaker
Worth ruling out first because it’s free. A tripped breaker, a GFCI outlet that’s popped, or a damaged cord produces a completely dead machine. Laundry outlets in older homes are sometimes on shared circuits that trip when something else draws power.
Control Panel Lockout or Delay Setting
Nearly every modern washer has a control lock for child safety, and many have delay-start. Both produce a machine that appears to ignore the start button entirely. Frequently triggered accidentally, and the fix is a button held down for a few seconds.
Failed Start Button or Membrane Switch
The button itself wears out, or the membrane behind the panel loses contact. The machine is fine, the instruction never arrives. Common on heavily used machines and in rental properties.
Main Control Board
The board that coordinates everything. When it fails the machine may be completely unresponsive or partially responsive in odd ways. Genuinely less common than people assume — it gets blamed often and is at fault comparatively rarely, which is exactly why it should be tested before it’s replaced.
Motor Control or Thermal Cutout
Some machines have a separate motor control module, and many will refuse to restart while the motor is thermally protected after an overload. A washer that stopped mid-cycle and now won’t restart may simply need to cool before it will respond.
Before You Call
Worth ruling out first. If one of these is the answer you’ve saved yourself a service call, and if none of them are, the diagnosis starts from a better place:
- Confirm power properly. Plug something else into the outlet. Check the breaker, and reset the GFCI if the laundry outlet has one. Dead machines are supply problems more often than people expect.
- Look for a control lock indicator. Usually a padlock icon. Holding the relevant button for a few seconds clears it on most machines — the manual will name the button.
- Close the door firmly and listen. A front loader should make an audible click as the lock engages. No click means the lock isn’t confirming, and the machine will never start.
- Check for a delay-start or a paused cycle. Both look like a broken washer and neither is one.
- If it stopped mid-cycle, leave it an hour. Thermal protection resets on its own once the motor cools. If it then starts normally, the real question is what overloaded it.

Door lock assemblies and their plastic components become brittle in cold, and electronics behave differently below their rated operating range. Several causes on the list above produce an identical symptom, and they sit at very different price points. That’s the whole argument for testing rather than guessing — a wrong part fitted confidently still leaves you with a broken appliance and a smaller bank balance.
What a Proper Diagnosis Does
- Splits dead from won’t-proceed immediately. Those are two different repair paths and the distinction takes seconds to establish. Everything after depends on getting it right.
- Tests the door lock rather than assuming the board. The lock is cheap and common; the board is expensive and comparatively rare. Getting that backwards is one of the more costly misdiagnoses in this trade.
- Checks the simple causes without charging for a lecture. If it’s a control lock or a tripped GFCI, that’s the answer and the visit ends at the service call.
- Looks at why, not just what. A washer that thermally tripped was working hard for a reason — often a drain restriction or a failing bearing. Fixing the symptom without asking why books the next call.
