Fisher & Paykel builds appliances that solve problems differently — the DishDrawer being the obvious example. That independent streak makes them a favourite among Calgary owners who did their research. Kodiak services the electric Fisher & Paykel range: refrigeration, laundry, DishDrawer and electric cooking.
We'll get back to you and confirm your spot on the list.
Fisher & Paykel was founded in New Zealand in 1934 by Woolf Fisher and Maurice Paykel, initially importing appliances — Crosley, Maytag and Pilot products — into a small and distant market. When the New Zealand government banned imports, the company had a choice: stop, or start building. It started building, manufacturing Kelvinator washing machines under licence from 1938 before moving to its own designs.
That history explains the brand’s character. A manufacturer isolated from the major appliance markets had to engineer independently rather than follow, which is where products like the DishDrawer come from. The company split in 2001 into appliances and healthcare arms; Haier took a 20 percent stake in 2009 and completed a full takeover in 2012. Manufacturing today spans China, Italy, Mexico and Thailand.
The DishDrawer Idea
The DishDrawer is Fisher & Paykel’s signature product and a genuinely different approach to dishwashing: two independent drawers rather than one large cavity, so a household can run a small load without waiting to fill a full machine. Each drawer is its own system with its own pump, motor and controls — which means one drawer can fail while the other works perfectly, and that’s useful diagnostic information rather than a puzzle.
Honest note from Kodiak: Fisher & Paykel has a smaller North American installed base than the mass-market brands, so some parts are ordered rather than carried. We’ll be honest at diagnosis about whether yours is a common component or a special order, and we hedge on timing rather than inventing a date.
Our Calgary technicians know the Fisher & Paykel platform. We aim to stock the most common parts so most repairs can be done in a single visit.
Each drawer has its own drain path and pump. A blocked filter or a failing pump in one drawer while the other works normally is common — and it tells you immediately which system to look at.
The drawer design relies on a lid seal that closes over the top of the drawer. When that seal hardens or the mechanism misaligns, you get leaks or a drawer that won’t start because it can’t confirm sealed.
Fisher & Paykel top-loaders use a direct-drive motor system rather than a conventional belt and transmission. Fewer wear parts, but when the rotor, stator or its control misbehaves the symptoms differ from a conventional washer and need to be read correctly.
The familiar shortlist — condenser coils, evaporator fan, defrost heater or thermostat, door seals. Same diagnostic order as any fridge, and the cheapest causes get ruled out first.
Elements fail visibly, sensors fail quietly by reporting the wrong temperature to the control. Two different repairs at two different prices, and both quick to test.
Erratic behaviour or an unresponsive display. Frequently a sensor or connection feeding bad data rather than the board itself, so we test before condemning the expensive part.
Washers, dryers, fridges, dishwashers, stoves, freezers, and over-the-range microwaves — we fix them all.
You get a firm labor quote before we start. Parts shown separately on your invoice.
How it works: Labour is our flat rate, quoted before we start. Parts are quoted separately. Some parts take longer to source; we'll always tell you upfront.
A note on parts: Fisher & Paykel’s North American installed base is smaller than the mass-market brands, so some components are ordered rather than carried on the truck. We quote parts separately and hedge honestly on timing rather than promising a date we don’t control. Labour stays flat-rate in the range above. Electric equipment only — gas cooktops we refer to a gas-certified shop.
We know every Calgary neighbourhood. No call centre — just a local team that shows up when they say they will.
Every Kodiak job comes with liability insurance and a parts-and-labour warranty. Your home is protected — and so is the repair.
We quote labor as a flat rate before we start. Parts shown separately — no hidden fees, no hourly clock running while we work.
Yes, and that’s one of the design’s real advantages. Each drawer is an independent system with its own pump, motor and controls, so a fault in one doesn’t require touching the other.
Common components generally, yes. The North American installed base is smaller than the mass-market brands, so some parts are ordered rather than stocked. We’ll tell you which yours is at diagnosis and won’t promise an arrival date we don’t control.
Fisher & Paykel’s direct-drive laundry system, which drives the drum without a conventional belt and transmission. Fewer mechanical wear parts, but it fails differently from a conventional washer, so diagnosis needs someone who knows the platform.
Haier. It took a 20 percent stake in 2009 and completed a full takeover in 2012. The appliance business is no longer listed in New Zealand, though the brand identity and engineering approach have continued.
No — Kodiak services electric appliances only, with no gas-fitter certification. Refrigeration, laundry, DishDrawer and electric cooking we handle. Mention gas when you contact us and we’ll refer you on.
Generally yes, particularly the laundry and DishDrawer products, which are built to be serviced. Where a repair doesn’t make sense against the age and value of the machine, we’ll say so before you spend anything beyond the service call.
