Thermador was founded in 1916, and its list of firsts is genuinely unusual. In 1932 it became the first company in the US market to produce built-in ovens. In 1947 it became the first US company to sell home appliances made of stainless steel, launching the first built-in wall oven together with a matching built-in cooktop — the layout nearly every premium kitchen now takes for granted.
BSH acquired the brand in 1998, which is why Thermador shares engineering DNA with Bosch and Gaggenau. The modern range keeps the same instinct for firsts: the Freedom Induction Cooktop was the first full-surface induction appliance, and the Sapphire and Star Sapphire dishwashers arrived with the Radiance Collection in 2018.
Where Thermador Sits Today
Thermador is BSH’s North American luxury line, sharing engineering approaches with Bosch while targeting a higher tier. The Freedom Induction Cooktop was the first full-surface induction appliance, meaning cookware can be placed anywhere on the surface rather than on fixed rings. The Sapphire dishwasher line, introduced in the 2018 Radiance Collection, includes custom panel-ready models with push-to-open handleless designs.

Electric elements fail visibly — a break or a burn-through in the coil. The oven runs but never reaches temperature, or heats unevenly. Straightforward once confirmed, and confirming takes a meter and a minute.
Induction needs ferrous cookware and a working coil beneath it. When one zone stops recognising a pan that works elsewhere on the surface, that points at the coil or its control — not at your pan.
A drifting sensor tells the control board the wrong temperature, so the oven runs hot or cold while insisting it’s correct. Baking results go off before anything looks broken. Inexpensive part, commonly misdiagnosed as a board fault.
On a premium dishwasher the usual suspects still apply — filter, spray arm jets, water arriving too cool, scale from hard water. Worth ruling those out before anyone discusses a pump.
Wall ovens will refuse to operate if the door latch doesn’t confirm closed, and heavy premium doors put real load on hinges over years. A door that no longer sits square is both a heat-loss problem and a control problem.
Unresponsive panels or erratic behaviour can be the board, but frequently it’s a sensor or a connection feeding it bad information. Boards are among the pricier parts here, which is exactly why they should be tested rather than assumed.

Yes. Induction cooktops have individual coils, control boards, sensors and cooling fans, and each can be tested and replaced. A single dead zone is usually a contained repair rather than a whole-cooktop replacement.
