If there is an Inglis in the basement, it has probably been there a long time and probably still works. These are simple, mechanical, Canadian-built laundry machines, and they are among the most satisfying appliances to repair. Kodiak works on Inglis laundry across Calgary.
John Inglis and Company was a Toronto manufacturer long before it made a washing machine. In 1946 it reached an agreement with the Nineteen Hundred Corporation — the firm that would become Whirlpool — to build home laundry appliances, and produced its first wringer washer that year. The automatic washer followed in 1950, then electric dryers and dishwashers.
By 1966 Inglis was the leading producer of domestic laundry appliances in Canada, and in 1972 it built its one-millionth automatic washer and began manufacturing under the Whirlpool name as well. Whirlpool took control of the company in 1987 and renamed it Whirlpool Canada in 2001, but kept Inglis as a brand. For a repair technician the practical consequence is excellent: an Inglis is a Whirlpool underneath, and Whirlpool parts are the easiest parts in the country to get.
Honest note from Kodiak: Inglis appliances are feature-rich and well-built. Ice maker issues on certain French door fridge models are a well-documented weak point in the industry. We'll always give you a straight diagnosis before recommending a repair.
Our Calgary technicians have seen every Inglis failure mode. We’ll carry the most common parts on every truck so most repairs can be done in a single visit.
On direct-drive Inglis top-loaders this is very often the motor coupler, a small part designed to fail before anything expensive does. It is doing exactly what it was meant to do. Replacement is straightforward and the part costs very little.
A top-loader that fills and drains but refuses to spin is usually reporting an open lid, whether or not the lid is open. The switch is a defined, inexpensive component and the symptom is unmistakable once you know it.
A blown thermal fuse or a failed heating element. The fuse matters because it rarely fails on its own — it usually blows because airflow was restricted, which means the vent needs clearing at the same time or the new fuse follows the old one.
Drum support rollers, the idler pulley and the belt are the wear items, and they announce themselves clearly. Left long enough a worn roller can score the drum, so this is one worth attending to early while it is still a small job.
Pump seals, hose connections and the tub seal are the usual sources. Finding which one is the whole job; the repair itself is generally simple once the leak is traced to its actual origin rather than where the water ends up.
Coins, buttons and the occasional sock reach the pump and either jam the impeller or damage it. We check for an obstruction before condemning the pump — a blocked pump and a dead pump present identically and cost very differently.
Washers, dryers, fridges, dishwashers, stoves and freezers — we fix them all.

Yes. Whirlpool acquired the company in 1987 and renamed it Whirlpool Canada in 2001, but kept Inglis as a brand for laundry. A great many older Inglis machines are also still in service across Alberta.
Usually yes, and that is the brand's great advantage. Inglis machines run on Whirlpool platforms, so the parts are the same ones stocked for millions of Whirlpool appliances. If something is genuinely discontinued we will tell you straight away.
Often, yes. These are simple mechanical machines and the common faults are inexpensive wear items. We will give you the honest picture — cost of the repair against the realistic life left — and let you decide.
Yes. Inglis built dishwashers and ranges alongside laundry, and plenty are still in service. Same Whirlpool parts logic applies.
The usual suspects are the lid switch, the drain path and the motor coupler, depending on exactly where in the cycle it stops. Tell us at what point it quits — that detail alone narrows it considerably.
